1. The quick verdict

Worth it if you decide where and how your team or organization uses AI and work in a Microsoft environment. It covers the business value of generative AI, Microsoft’s AI portfolio, and adoption strategy, with no coding.

The one thing to know before you register: it is a 45-minute, entry-level exam, so it signals AI fluency for leaders, not deep strategy expertise.

4. What the exam tests

DomainWeightWhat it means in plain language
Identify the business value of generative AI solutions35–40%AI concepts, prompting and RAG at a leader’s level, cost drivers and ROI, and risks such as fabrications and bias.
Identify benefits, capabilities, and opportunities for Microsoft’s AI apps and services35–40%What Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio and Foundry Tools can do, and when to build, buy or extend.
Identify an implementation and adoption strategy for Microsoft’s AI apps and services20–25%Responsible AI governance, adoption barriers, AI champions, and licensing options.

5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t

Take it if you are:

  • A manager, department head or business leader planning AI adoption on Microsoft tools.
  • A consultant who advises clients on Copilot and Azure AI investments.
  • A transformation, change or programme lead running an AI rollout.

Skip it or wait if you are:

  • An individual contributor who mainly uses Copilot. AB-730 fits better.
  • Looking for a vendor-neutral strategy credential. Most of the exam is Microsoft’s own portfolio.
  • Not in a Microsoft environment. AWS AI Business Strategist covers similar ground for AWS.

6. What to expect after passing

  • What it signals: You can make the business case for AI and plan adoption across Microsoft’s AI products.
  • What it doesn’t prove: Experience delivering an AI programme, or any technical skill.
  • Where it’s asked for: Mostly employer and Microsoft partner upskilling programmes; it appears more in consulting proposals than job postings.
  • Natural next step: AI governance credentials for depth, or AB-100 if you move toward solution architecture.

7. How to prepare

  • Official: The AB-731 study guide, the free practice assessment, exam prep videos and the exam sandbox.
  • Practice: Use leader-level scenarios on choosing between Copilot, Copilot Studio and Foundry, and on licensing and adoption choices.

Hands-on:

  1. Write a one-page business case for a Copilot or agent use case, with costs and expected ROI (Business value).
  2. Map three use cases to build, buy or extend, and pick a Microsoft product for each (Microsoft AI apps and services).
  3. Draft an adoption plan: champions, training, governance and success measures (Implementation and adoption).

9. FAQ

AB-731 or AWS AI Business Strategist?

Pick the platform your organization uses. AB-731 is shorter and more product-focused; AWS’s exam goes deeper into strategy, governance and scaling pilots.

Do I need technical knowledge?

No coding. You need to understand AI terms such as RAG and prompting well enough to make decisions.

Is AB-731 worth it for consultants?

Yes, if your clients are Microsoft shops. It gives a shared vocabulary for Copilot and Azure AI decisions.
