1. The quick verdict

Worth it if you are starting out building AI solutions on Azure and can read basic Python. AI-901 replaced the old AI-900, and it is no longer a “for everyone” exam: more than half of it is building with Microsoft Foundry.

The one thing to know before you register: if you are non-technical, this is the wrong Microsoft exam; take AB-730 or AB-731 instead.

2. Our ratings

CriterionScoreWhy
Difficulty (5 = hardest)●●○○○ 2/5Short and foundational, but the Foundry and Python content makes it harder than the old AI-900.
Cost burden, including fee, prep and retake risk (5 = most expensive)●○○○○ 1/5Low fee, short prep, and the credential never expires.
Career value today (5 = highest)●●●○○ 3/5Well known entry credential in Microsoft shops; entry level by design.
Skill transfer beyond this vendor (5 = most portable)●●●○○ 3/5AI concepts and responsible AI transfer; Foundry specifics do not.
Hands-on experience required (5 = must have built real things)●●○○○ 2/5Light hands-on Foundry and Python familiarity is enough.
Ease of access (5 = anyone can register)●●●●● 5/5Open to anyone, in 13 languages.

4. What the exam tests

DomainWeightWhat it means in plain language
Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry55–60%Building simple generative AI apps and agents, text and speech, vision and image generation, and document extraction in Foundry.
Identify AI concepts and capabilities40–45%Responsible AI principles, model components and settings, and the main AI workload types.

5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t

Take it if you are:

  • A junior developer, student or career-switcher starting on Azure AI.
  • A developer from another cloud who wants a quick, structured entry to Microsoft Foundry.
  • A technical consultant or pre-sales engineer who demos Azure AI.

Skip it or wait if you are:

  • Non-technical. Take AB-730 (using Copilot at work) or AB-731 (leading AI adoption).
  • Already building on Azure AI. Go straight to AI-103.
  • An IT admin managing Microsoft 365 Copilot. AB-900 fits better.

6. What to expect after passing

  • What it signals: You understand core AI concepts and can build simple AI solutions in Microsoft Foundry.
  • What it doesn’t prove: Production-grade development, security or operations skill.
  • Where it’s asked for: A common entry credential in Microsoft partner firms and Azure-focused teams; rarely a hiring requirement on its own.
  • Natural next step: AI-103 (Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate).

7. How to prepare

  • Official: The AI-901 study guide, the free Microsoft Learn course Introduction to AI in Azure (AI-901T00), the exam sandbox, and the free practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator.
  • Practice: Use questions that mix concept checks with “which Foundry feature would you use” scenarios. Make sure they match AI-901, not the old AI-900.

Hands-on:

  1. Deploy a model in Foundry and build a small chat app with the Python SDK (Implement AI solutions).
  2. Run a document through an information-extraction tool and inspect the structured output (Implement AI solutions).
  3. For one use case, write down how each responsible AI principle applies (AI concepts).

9. FAQ

What is the difference between AI-900 and AI-901?

AI-901 replaced AI-900. The new exam spends 55–60% on building solutions in Microsoft Foundry and expects basic Python, while AI-900 was mostly conceptual.

Is AI-901 suitable for non-technical people?

Not really. Business users should look at AB-730 or AB-731, which need no coding.

Does AI-901 expire?

No. Microsoft Fundamentals certifications do not expire.

Do I need AI-901 before AI-103?

No. There is no prerequisite; developers already building on Azure can go straight to AI-103.
