1. The quick verdict

Worth it if you use Microsoft 365 every day and want to prove you get real work done with Copilot and its agents. It is short, cheap and needs no coding.

The one thing to know before you register: the exam changes on 2026-10-20, adding a new section on agents and Copilot Cowork, so study from the updated study guide.

4. What the exam tests

From 2026-10-20:

DomainWeightWhat it means in plain language
Understand generative AI fundamentals25–30%What Copilot can do across Microsoft 365, and how to use it responsibly with company data.
Manage prompts and chats by using Microsoft 365 Copilot20–25%Writing, saving, sharing and scheduling prompts; organizing chats and Notebooks.
Manage business content and collaboration by using Microsoft 365 Copilot20–25%Drafting and analyzing documents, creating visuals, and using Copilot in meetings.
Drive business outcomes by using agents20–25%Choosing and using prebuilt agents, and completing tasks with Copilot Cowork.

The October update removed the old “create and manage Copilot agents” skill and added the agents section above.

5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t

Take it if you are:

  • An analyst, consultant, project manager or operations professional who works in Microsoft 365 daily.
  • Someone who wants a recognized, low-cost proof of AI fluency for a CV or appraisal.
  • A team member asked to become a Copilot champion.

Skip it or wait if you are:

  • A leader deciding where AI investment goes. AB-731 fits better.
  • Technical and wanting to build. AI-901 or AB-620 fit better.
  • Not on Microsoft 365. Most questions are about Copilot features.

6. What to expect after passing

  • What it signals: You use Copilot and agents productively and responsibly at work.
  • What it doesn’t prove: Ability to build, configure or govern AI solutions.
  • Where it’s asked for: Mostly employer-led Copilot upskilling programmes; rarely a job-posting requirement.
  • Natural next step: AB-731 if you lead change, or AB-620 if you want to build agents.

7. How to prepare

  • Official: The AB-730 study guide (October 2026 version), the free practice assessment, exam prep videos and the exam sandbox.
  • Practice: Use task-based questions (“Which Copilot feature would you use to…”). Avoid sets written before the October update, which still test agent creation.

Hands-on:

  1. Save and schedule three prompts you actually reuse at work (Prompts and chats).
  2. Use Copilot to draft and then analyze a real document and a meeting recap (Business content).
  3. Complete one multi-step task with a prebuilt agent or Copilot Cowork (Agents).

9. FAQ

AB-730 or AB-731: which should I take?

AB-730 if you use Copilot yourself; AB-731 if you decide how a team or organization adopts AI. Both are 45 minutes and need no coding.

What changes on 2026-10-20?

A new 20–25% section on prebuilt agents and Copilot Cowork, smaller weights for the other sections, and the agent-creation skill removed.

Do I need a Copilot licence to prepare?

It helps a lot. The questions assume you know how the features behave in practice.

Is it useful if my company uses ChatGPT or Gemini instead?

Partly. Prompting and responsible-use skills carry over, but most questions test Microsoft 365 Copilot features.
