Claude Certified Associate – Foundations (CCAO-F)

1. The quick verdict

Worth it if you use Claude daily in a non-engineering role (operations, consulting, project management, marketing) and your employer is in the Claude Partner Network. It is the cheapest and least technical of Anthropic’s four exams, and it tests judgment about using Claude well at work, not coding.

The one thing to know before you register: like the others, it needs a company email from a Claude Partner Network organization.

5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t

Take it if you are:

  • A consultant, project manager, analyst or operations lead at a Claude Partner Network firm who uses Claude every day.
  • Someone leading Claude adoption for a business team and wanting a shared baseline of good practice.
  • A pre-sales or delivery person who needs to speak credibly about Claude without being an engineer.

Skip it or wait if you are:

  • Outside a partner organization. You cannot register yet.
  • A developer or architect. Go straight to CCDV-F or CCAR-F; this exam will teach you little.
  • Someone who has barely used Claude. Use it on real work for a few weeks first; the questions assume hands-on habits.

6. What to expect after passing

  • What it signals: You use Claude responsibly and effectively at work: you check outputs, protect sensitive data, and pick the right tool for the task.
  • What it doesn’t prove: Any ability to build, integrate or automate with Claude through code. It also says nothing about other AI tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot.
  • Where it’s asked for: Mainly inside the Claude Partner Network, where certified headcount counts toward partner standing. Anthropic has published no hiring data, and outside partner firms it is rarely asked for yet.
  • Natural next step: CCDV-F if you want to start building, or broader AI governance learning if you lead adoption.

7. How to prepare

  • Official: The exam guide PDF on the Partner Academy exam page, the free courses on Anthropic Academy for Claude users, and Anthropic’s help-centre articles on Projects, files and model choice.
  • Practice: Use scenario-based questions that ask what you should do next, not feature trivia. A good set explains why each wrong option is wrong and tags questions by domain.

Hands-on:

  1. Set up a Claude Project for one real recurring task, with instructions and reference files (Configuration, Workflow).
  2. Take one output a week and fact-check it line by line; note what Claude got wrong and why (Output Evaluation).
  3. Write a one-page team guide on what data may and may not go into Claude (Governance).

9. FAQ

Do I need to know how to code for the Claude Associate exam?

No. The exam is about using Claude well at work: prompting, checking outputs, handling data safely and choosing the right product. There is no code.

How much does CCAO-F cost?

US$99 per attempt, the lowest of Anthropic’s four exams. Some partner organizations get discounts, so check with your employer before paying.

Can I take it without working at a partner company?

Not currently. Registration needs a company email from a Claude Partner Network organization. Membership is free for organizations.

Is CCAO-F useful if I also use ChatGPT or Copilot?

Partly. Output checking, data handling and prompting habits carry over. Product, Projects and model-selection questions are specific to Claude.

Does the certification expire?

Yes, after 12 months. Renewal is a free non-proctored online assessment if you do it before expiry; after that, you retake the full exam.
