Claude and Google have AI certifications. So where is OpenAI’s?

2026 is the year AI companies started certifying people. Anthropic launched four Claude certifications, proctored through Pearson VUE. Google Cloud runs proctored AI exams from Generative AI Leader up to Professional Agentic Architect. Microsoft rebuilt its whole AI lineup this year, AWS added new AI exams, and NVIDIA certifies people on LLMs and agents.

So the obvious question, for anyone who opens ChatGPT every morning: where is the OpenAI certification?

The fog around OpenAI certification

OpenAI announced its own certification program in 2025, with a goal of certifying millions of people. Since then the answer to “Can I get OpenAI certified?” has been anything but clear.

Search for it and you’ll find pages saying the exam is live, pages quoting a fee (US$399 is a popular one), exam codes, question counts and even coding challenges, and other pages saying nothing exists at all. Most of them are guessing. Very few link to anything OpenAI has published.

Here is what OpenAI’s own pages say as of October 2026.

The short answer

  • Free OpenAI courses with certificates are live, for anyone with a ChatGPT account. Pass the course assessments and you get badges and certificates of completion.
  • OpenAI’s actual certification exists, but you can’t sign up for it yourself. It runs in an invite-only app for companies and universities on ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu.
  • There is no public, proctored OpenAI exam you can book, and no published fee, exam code or exam guide. Pages quoting those details don’t match anything OpenAI has published.

What OpenAI is doing

In September 2025 OpenAI announced OpenAI Certifications as an expansion of OpenAI Academy, its free learning platform. The plan covers several levels, from basic AI use at work to more advanced skills such as prompt engineering, with learners preparing and earning the certification inside ChatGPT. OpenAI set a goal of certifying 10 million Americans by 2030, named launch partners including Walmart, John Deere, Boston Consulting Group, Accenture and Indeed, and announced a jobs platform to connect employers with people who have AI skills.

That certification now runs through an app called OpenAI Certified: a learning experience inside ChatGPT, powered by Coursera, with credentials issued through Credly. OpenAI’s help page says it’s available only to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces, by invitation. If your employer or university has it switched on, you can earn OpenAI’s credential there. If not, there’s no way to sign up on your own.

What anyone can get today: free OpenAI Academy courses

In June 2026 OpenAI added a set of workplace AI courses to OpenAI Academy. According to OpenAI’s help page on the courses:

  • They’re free and available worldwide to anyone with a ChatGPT account. You don’t need a paid plan or a company workspace.
  • Each course ends with an assessment of 10–20 questions drawn from a larger question bank. You need 80% or higher to pass, and you can retry.
  • Passing a course’s assessment earns a badge. Finishing every course in a pathway, and passing each assessment, earns a certificate of completion.
  • OpenAI is clear that these badges and certificates are not certifications, and that earning them doesn’t guarantee eligibility for a future certification.

All of them are on the OpenAI Academy courses page. Course times are OpenAI’s own estimates.

What doesn’t exist yet

There is still no OpenAI certification that an individual can book and sit as a proctored exam. As of October 2026 there is:

  • no public registration or booking page
  • no published fee
  • no exam code, exam guide or domain weights
  • no announced date for opening it to the public

That gap has been filled by guesswork. If a page can’t link to an OpenAI source for a fact, don’t plan around it.

Is a free OpenAI certificate worth getting?

For the learning, yes. The courses are free, short and come from the company that makes ChatGPT. The Foundations pathway teaches habits that carry over to any AI tool: giving clear context, checking outputs and breaking work into steps. The API pathway is a solid, free introduction for developers to retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation and agents.

As a credential, keep expectations modest. List a pathway certificate on your CV or LinkedIn as a completed course, not as a certification, and don’t expect it to carry the weight of a proctored exam. If OpenAI opens its full certification to the public later, the courses will still be useful preparation.

If you really want a certification now

If you need a credential employers will weigh today, choose a proctored exam by what you do, not by brand name:

The comparison page lets you filter every exam by role, level and fee.

How to tell when a public OpenAI exam arrives

When OpenAI opens a public exam, expect three things: an announcement on openai.com or OpenAI Academy, a way for individuals to register without an employer, and a published exam guide with topics. Until all three exist, treat any “OpenAI exam guide” with suspicion.

The AI Skill Atlas verdict: take OpenAI’s free courses for the skills and list them as courses, not certifications. If you need a credential employers will weigh now, choose a proctored exam that matches your role, and revisit OpenAI once it opens a real exam to the public.
