1. The quick verdict
Worth it if you write code with GitHub Copilot and want to prove you use it well: responsibly, securely and productively. It tests using an AI coding assistant, not building AI, and now covers agent mode, MCP and the Copilot CLI.
The one thing to know before you register: it is a GitHub certification delivered through Microsoft Learn and Pearson VUE, and it is about GitHub Copilot, not Microsoft 365 Copilot.

4. What the exam tests
| Domain | Weight | What it means in plain language |
|---|---|---|
| Use GitHub Copilot features | 25–30% | Inline suggestions, chat, the Copilot CLI, agent mode, Copilot Edits, MCP, sub-agents, code review and organization policies. |
| Use GitHub Copilot responsibly | 15–20% | Responsible AI principles, risks and limitations of generative AI, and validating its output. |
| Understand GitHub Copilot data and architecture | 10–15% | How Copilot builds prompts, handles your data, and turns them into suggestions. |
| Apply prompt engineering and context crafting | 10–15% | Structuring prompts, giving context, and zero-shot vs few-shot prompting. |
| Improve developer productivity with GitHub Copilot | 10–15% | Generating, refactoring, documenting and testing code, and modernizing legacy code. |
| Configure privacy, content exclusions, and safeguards | 10–15% | Content exclusions, public-code filtering, editor settings and troubleshooting. |
5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t
Take it if you are:
- A developer who uses GitHub Copilot daily and wants a recognized credential for it.
- A tech lead or engineering manager rolling Copilot out to a team and setting its policies.
- A DevOps engineer or app maker who wants structured knowledge of Copilot’s agent and CLI features.
Skip it or wait if you are:
- Not a developer. Microsoft AB-730 covers Microsoft 365 Copilot for business users.
- Wanting to prove you can build AI applications. AI-103, CCDV-F or AWS AIP-C01 test that.
- Using a different coding assistant, such as Claude Code or Cursor. The habits transfer, but the feature questions will not.
6. What to expect after passing
- What it signals: You use an AI coding assistant productively, securely and responsibly.
- What it doesn’t prove: Software engineering depth, or ability to design or build AI systems.
- Where it’s asked for: Mostly employer Copilot rollouts and Microsoft or GitHub partner firms; increasingly listed as a nice-to-have in developer job postings.
- Natural next step: An AI developer certification such as AI-103 or CCDV-F if you want to build AI, not just use it.
7. How to prepare
- Official: The GH-300 study guide (August 2026 version), the free practice assessment, the exam sandbox, and GitHub Copilot documentation.
- Practice: Use questions on features, settings and responsible use. Check they cover agent mode, MCP and the CLI; older sets miss them.
Hands-on:
- Use agent mode to build and test a small feature end to end, then review the changes (Copilot features, Productivity).
- Connect an MCP server and try the Copilot CLI on a real repository (Copilot features).
- Set content exclusions and public-code filtering for a repository, and check what changes (Privacy and safeguards).
8. Compare with
- Claude Certified Developer – Foundations (CCDV-F), $125: Building on the Claude API, tools and MCP; partner-company employees only.
- Microsoft Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (AI-103): Building AI apps and agents on Azure, rather than using an AI coding tool.
- Microsoft AI Business Professional (AB-730): Microsoft 365 Copilot for business users, a different product.

9. FAQ
Is the GitHub Copilot certification the same as Microsoft Copilot certifications?
No. GH-300 covers GitHub Copilot, the coding assistant. Microsoft’s AB-730 and AB-900 cover Microsoft 365 Copilot for office work and administration.
Does GH-300 cover agent mode and MCP?
Yes. The August 2026 study guide includes agent mode, Copilot Edits, MCP, sub-agents and the Copilot CLI.
Do I need to write code in the exam?
No. You read code and Copilot output and choose the right answer, but you need real programming experience to follow it.
How long is it valid?
Two years. GitHub is moving renewals to Microsoft’s process, and some expiring certifications are being extended by 6 months during the transition.
