Fee $200Level AdvancedAccess Open to anyoneDifficulty 4/5
This is a proctored Google Cloud certification exam, not a Coursera course certificate.
1. The quick verdict
Worth it if you build, deploy and run ML and AI solutions on Google Cloud. It is one of the longest-established cloud ML credentials and now covers foundation-model solutions too.
The one thing to know before you register: the exam was recently updated for Google’s move from Vertex AI to Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, so older prep material uses the wrong product names.

4. What the exam tests
| Domain | Weight | What it means in plain language |
|---|---|---|
| Scaling prototypes into ML models | ~21% | Training and tuning models for production. |
| Serving and scaling models | ~20% | Deployment strategies and inference at scale. |
| Automating and orchestrating ML pipelines | ~18% | End-to-end pipelines and retraining with Agent Platform Pipelines. |
| Collaborating within and across teams to manage data and models | ~16% | Data exploration, preprocessing, feature stores and experiment tracking. |
| Architecting low-code AI solutions | ~13% | Using BigQuery ML, AutoML, Model Garden and prebuilt APIs. |
| Monitoring AI solutions | ~13% | Identifying risks and evaluating models continuously in production. |
5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t
Take it if you are:
- An ML engineer, MLOps engineer or data scientist working on Google Cloud.
- A data engineer moving into ML on BigQuery and Agent Platform.
- An AI engineer who needs a recognized Google ML credential.
Skip it or wait if you are:
- Mainly building agents. Professional Agentic Architect fits better.
- New to ML or to Google Cloud. Build experience first; at $200 a failed attempt is expensive.
- Non-technical. Generative AI Leader is the business-level option.
6. What to expect after passing
- What it signals: You can take ML models from data to monitored production on Google Cloud.
- What it doesn’t prove: Agent architecture or deep research-level ML.
- Where it’s asked for: ML engineer and MLOps roles on Google Cloud, and Google Cloud partner requirements.
- Natural next step: Professional Agentic Architect.
7. How to prepare
- Official: The current exam guide, the Professional ML Engineer learning path on Google Skills, sample questions, and Agent Platform and BigQuery ML documentation.
- Practice: Use scenario questions that weigh managed versus custom options under cost and scale constraints. Make sure the set uses current Agent Platform names, not Vertex AI.
Hands-on:
- Train a model in BigQuery ML and an AutoML model on the same data, then compare (Low-code AI solutions).
- Build an Agent Platform pipeline that preprocesses, trains, registers and deploys a model (Pipelines, Serving).
- Turn on model monitoring and simulate drift (Monitoring).
8. Compare with
- AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate (MLA-C01), $150: AWS’s equivalent, built around SageMaker, at Associate level.
- Microsoft MLOps Engineer Associate (AI-300): Microsoft’s equivalent on Azure, with more GenAIOps.
- NVIDIA Generative AI LLMs Professional (NCP-GENL), $200: LLM-specific: fine-tuning, distributed training and GPU optimisation, not tied to one cloud.

9. FAQ
Is this exam about Vertex AI?
Not by that name any more. The current exam uses Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform product names; check the exam guide for the mapping.
How hard is the Google Professional ML Engineer exam?
Hard without real experience. It covers the full ML lifecycle on Google Cloud, and Google recommends 3+ years in industry.
What happens if I fail?
You can retry after 14 days, then 60 days after a second fail and 365 days after a third. Each attempt costs the full fee.
How long is it valid?
Two years. Renew by passing the exam again within 60 days before expiry.
