Fee $100Level BeginnerAccess Open to anyoneDifficulty 2/5
1. The quick verdict
Worth it if you need a credible, low-cost baseline in AI, machine learning and generative AI on AWS, whether you are technical or not. It is the cheapest, most widely recognized entry point to AWS’s AI track and open to anyone.
The one thing to know before you register: it tests understanding, not building, so it will not prove you can deliver an AI solution.

| Domain | Weight | What it means in plain language |
|---|---|---|
| Applications of Foundation Models | 28% | Using foundation models: prompting, RAG, fine-tuning choices, and evaluating outputs. |
| Fundamentals of Generative AI | 24% | What generative AI is, how it works, and where it fits or fails. |
| Fundamentals of AI and ML | 20% | Core AI/ML concepts, learning types, and the ML lifecycle. |

5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t
Take it if you are:
- A consultant, analyst, project manager or pre-sales person who needs to speak accurately about AI on AWS.
- A developer or IT professional starting the AWS AI track before ML Engineer or Generative AI Developer.
- Anyone wanting a recognized AI credential at low cost and without coding.
Skip it or wait if you are:
- Already building ML or generative AI solutions on AWS. Go straight to ML Engineer – Associate or Generative AI Developer – Professional.
- Focused on AI strategy and business cases rather than the technology. AI Business Strategist fits better.
- Not working with AWS at all. The concepts transfer, but a third of the questions assume AWS services.
6. What to expect after passing
- What it signals: You understand AI, ML and generative AI concepts and know which AWS services do what.
- What it doesn’t prove: That you can build, deploy or operate an AI system. Many hiring managers see it as an entry-level credential.
- Where it’s asked for: Common in AWS partner requirements and entry-level AI and cloud job listings, and often used by employers as a baseline for wider AI upskilling.
- Natural next step: ML Engineer – Associate for classic ML, or Generative AI Developer – Professional for foundation-model apps.
7. How to prepare
- Official: The AIF-C01 exam guide, the free AWS Skill Builder exam prep plan for AI Practitioner, and the AWS documentation for Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker AI.
- Practice: Use questions that cover all four question types, including ordering and matching. A good set explains why each wrong option is wrong and maps questions to domains.
Hands-on:
- Try two foundation models in the Amazon Bedrock playground on the same task and compare outputs and cost (Applications of FMs).
- Build a simple Bedrock Knowledge Base over a few documents to see RAG in action (Generative AI fundamentals).
- List the guardrails you would set for one use case: data, bias, human review (Responsible AI, Governance).
8. Compare with
- AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01), $100: For business roles; strategy, ROI and governance instead of AI concepts and services.
- AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate (MLA-C01), $150: The hands-on next step for building and running ML on AWS.
- Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901), $99: Microsoft’s entry AI exam, open to anyone; more hands-on, with basic Python and building in Microsoft Foundry.

9. FAQ
Is AWS AI Practitioner worth it for non-technical people?
Yes, if you work around AI on AWS. It needs no coding and gives a recognized vocabulary. If your role is about strategy and investment decisions, AI Business Strategist is the closer fit.
AI Practitioner or Cloud Practitioner first?
If you are new to cloud, Cloud Practitioner or its free Essentials course helps. If you know basic AWS services, go straight to AI Practitioner.
What question types are on the exam?
Multiple choice, multiple response, ordering and matching. Ordering and matching must be fully correct to score.
How do I keep the certification active?
It lasts 3 years. Passing ML Engineer – Associate or Generative AI Developer – Professional also renews it.
