1. The quick verdict
Worth it if you are a software or ML engineer building applications on the Claude API and your employer is in the Claude Partner Network. It is the most implementation-focused of Anthropic’s four exams: a third of it is API and integration mechanics.
The one thing to know before you register: you need a company email from a Claude Partner Network organization, and six months of real Claude building makes a large difference.

| Coding needed | Reading code (API requests and responses, JSON, SDK and tool definitions). No writing code. |
| Formal prerequisites | None |
| Realistic prerequisites | 1–5 years of software engineering and about 6 months building with Claude or a similar LLM platform (Anthropic’s own recommendation). |

4. What the exam tests
| Domain | Weight | What it means in plain language |
|---|---|---|
| Applications and Integration | 33.1% | How the Claude API works in practice: requests, responses, streaming, errors, configuration and common design patterns. |
| Model Selection and Optimization | 16.8% | Picking the right model and managing tokens, latency and cost. |
| Agents and Workflows | 14.7% | Building agent loops and workflows, including with the Claude Agent SDK. |
| Prompt and Context Engineering | 11.0% | Clear instructions, managing what goes into the context, and handling the output. |
| Tools and MCPs | 10.6% | Implementing tool calls and building MCP servers. |
| Security and Safety | 8.1% | Defending against prompt injection and jailbreaks, and adding guardrails. |
| Claude Code | 3.1% | The basics: sessions, CLAUDE.md files and core components. |
| Eval, Testing, and Debugging | 2.6% | Finding errors and reading traces. |
5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t
Take it if you are:
- A software, AI or ML engineer at a Claude Partner Network firm who ships features on the Claude API.
- A tech lead who reviews Claude integration code and wants a checklist of what good looks like.
- A developer moving from another LLM provider to Claude who wants a structured tour of the differences.
Skip it or wait if you are:
- Outside a partner organization. You cannot register yet.
- A non-developer. Take CCAO-F instead.
- Mainly designing systems rather than coding them. CCAR-F fits better.
- Without real API experience. Build a small app first; half the questions assume you have seen the API behave badly.
6. What to expect after passing
- What it signals: You can build working, cost-aware and reasonably secure applications on the Claude API, including tools and simple agents.
- What it doesn’t prove: System-level design judgment, production operations at scale, or evaluation skill (evals are only 2.6% of the exam).
- Where it’s asked for: Mainly inside the Claude Partner Network, where certified headcount counts toward partner standing. Anthropic has published no hiring data yet.
- Natural next step: CCAR-F to move from building to designing, then CCAR-P.
7. How to prepare
- Official: The exam guide PDF on the Partner Academy exam page, the free Anthropic Academy courses on the Claude API, MCP and Claude Code, and the Claude API documentation (messages, streaming, tool use, prompt caching, errors and rate limits).
- Practice: Use scenario-based questions that show real request/response snippets. A good set explains why each wrong option fails and weights questions like the exam, with about a third on API and integration.
Hands-on:
- Build a small app that calls the API with streaming, retries on errors and logs token cost (Applications, Model Selection).
- Add two tools and expose one through your own MCP server (Tools and MCPs, Agents).
- Try to break it with prompt injection, then add a guardrail (Security and Safety).
8. Compare with
- Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCAR-F), $125: Same price, but about system design and tradeoffs (agents, Claude Code, context) rather than API mechanics.
- AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional (AIP-C01), $300: Building generative AI apps on Amazon Bedrock (which also offers Claude): RAG, agents and guardrails; open to anyone, at professional level.
- Microsoft Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (AI-103), $165: Building AI apps and agents on Azure with Python; open to anyone.

9. FAQ
What is the difference between CCDV-F and CCAR-F?
CCDV-F tests building on the Claude API: requests, models, tools, security. CCAR-F tests designing systems: agent architecture, Claude Code setup and context management. Pick based on whether you mostly code or mostly design.
Do I have to write code in the exam?
No. You read code, API payloads and tool definitions and choose the right answer. You will not write code.
How much does CCDV-F cost?
US$125 per attempt. Some partner organizations get discounts, so check with your employer before paying.
Can I take it without working at a partner company?
Not currently. Registration needs a company email from a Claude Partner Network organization.
Does the certification expire?
Yes, after 12 months. Renewal is a free non-proctored online assessment if you do it before expiry; after that, you retake the full exam.
