1. The quick verdict

Worth it if you build AI applications and agents on Azure with Python. AI-103 replaced the retired Azure AI Engineer (AI-102), and a third of it is now generative AI and agents in Microsoft Foundry.

The one thing to know before you register: it is also the required stepping stone to the Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert (AI-500).

5. Who should take it, and who shouldn’t

Take it if you are:

  • A developer or AI engineer building generative AI apps or agents on Azure.
  • A holder of the retired AI-102 who wants a current credential.
  • Someone aiming for AI-500, which requires AI-103.

Skip it or wait if you are:

  • New to Python or Azure. Start with AI-901.
  • Building agents in Copilot Studio with low code. AB-620 fits better.
  • Focused on MLOps and model lifecycle. AI-300 fits better.

6. What to expect after passing

  • What it signals: You can build, secure and run AI applications and agents on Azure.
  • What it doesn’t prove: Large-scale multi-agent architecture, or ML model training.
  • Where it’s asked for: Azure AI engineer and developer roles, and Microsoft partner requirements. It inherits the recognition AI-102 had.
  • Natural next step: AI-500 (Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert).

7. How to prepare

  • Official: The AI-103 study guide, the Microsoft Learn course Develop AI apps and agents on Azure (AI-103T00), Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Search documentation, and the exam sandbox.
  • Practice: Use scenario questions that weigh service choice, cost and safety. Avoid AI-102 material, which misses most of the agent content.

Hands-on:

  1. Build a RAG app over your own documents with Azure AI Search and a Foundry model (Generative AI, Information extraction).
  2. Create an agent with two tools and memory, then add content-safety filters (Generative AI and agents, Plan and manage).
  3. Extract structured data from scanned documents with OCR (Information extraction).

9. FAQ

Is AI-103 the replacement for AI-102?

In practice, yes. The Azure AI Engineer certification (AI-102) is retired, and AI-103 is Microsoft’s current Azure AI developer exam, with much more on agents.

Which programming language does AI-103 use?

Python. The study guide asks for Python development experience.

Can I use Microsoft Learn during the exam?

Yes. Microsoft allows access to Microsoft Learn during Associate and Expert exams, but the timer keeps running.

How do I keep it active?

It lasts a year. Renew free with an online assessment in the 6 months before it expires.
